DHT Basics
We all know DHT is about 10 times stronger than testosterone, and here’s why: DHT has 4 times higher binding affinity to the androgen receptor than testosterone and binds 3 to 5 times longer. This makes DHT way more effective in doing what it’s supposed to do compared to testosterone.
Even though DHT is present in much lower amounts than testosterone, it’s significantly stronger. If you maximize your 5 alpha-reductase (5AR) activity and testosterone levels, you’ll end up with a much larger androgen pool compared to someone with low 5AR activity. This means more androgens available to bind to the androgen receptor, making you both more anabolic and androgenic.
Androgens Binding to the Androgen Receptor
Once androgens bind, these proteins detach, and the androgen receptor enters the cell nucleus. Inside the nucleus, it binds to the Androgen Response Element (ARE), where multiple cofactors and co-regulators come into play.
In short: different androgens trigger different actions, depending on how they bind to the androgen receptor and what cofactors are involved.
DHT, for example, stabilizes the androgen receptor more effectively than testosterone, resulting in a stronger anabolic signal in tissues that express 5 alpha-reductase.
DHT and Testosterone: Different Benefits, Different Roles
Testosterone and DHT aren’t interchangeable—they trigger different androgen response elements. Blocking 5 alpha-reductase, like with finasteride, prevents the conversion of testosterone into DHT and leaves you missing out on the unique benefits that DHT brings.
There’s a lot of bad information out there that says DHT isn’t important in adults—people think testosterone alone is enough. That’s wrong. DHT isn’t just a “stronger” testosterone. It has its own role and triggers different changes in the androgen receptor that testosterone simply doesn’t.
So, should you just use DHT instead of testosterone?
Nope. That’s not the answer either.
Testosterone has its own unique benefits, and using only DHT means you miss out on those. The key is to have both functioning optimally. If you’re not converting testosterone to DHT via 5AR, you’re leaving results on the table.
Why Bodybuilders Use DHT Anabolics Pre-Contest
Why do bodybuilders turn to DHT-based anabolics as they get closer to a contest?
When you’re trying to achieve that ultra-lean, dry, hard look on stage, testosterone alone won’t cut it.
Here’s why: DHT doesn’t aromatize into estrogen like testosterone does, meaning there’s less water retention, giving you that crisp, dry appearance.
DHT also has a stronger binding affinity to the androgen receptor, meaning it delivers a more potent anabolic signal, helping you retain muscle mass while cutting down body fat. That’s why guys will incorporate DHT-based compounds like Masteron or Winstrol in the final weeks before a show—to get the leanest, driest look possible while holding onto hard-earned muscle.
The key is DHT’s ability to keep you dry and full. Testosterone can cause water retention due to its conversion to estrogen, but DHT doesn’t have that issue. That’s why DHT anabolics become a go-to in the final stages of prep when every detail of your physique matters.
Why Anadrol Gives You Greater Muscle Fullness
Anadrol (Oxymetholone) is notorious for creating that massive, full look in bodybuilders. There’s a good reason for this—Anadrol works by dramatically increasing red blood cell production and glycogen retention in the muscles.
Here’s what happens:
Increased Red Blood Cell Production: Anadrol stimulates erythropoiesis, which increases the amount of red blood cells circulating in your body. More red blood cells mean greater oxygen delivery to your muscles, allowing them to function at a higher level and recover faster. This leads to that pumped, full look even at rest.
Enhanced Glycogen Retention: One of Anadrol’s biggest benefits is how it increases the muscles’ ability to store glycogen. Glycogen pulls water into the muscle cells, which expands their size and gives them that round, full appearance. The more glycogen your muscles can store, the fuller they’ll look. That’s why bodybuilders feel massive on Anadrol—it’s literally filling your muscles with both glycogen and water, increasing intracellular volume.
However, the downside of Anadrol is that it can also cause water retention under the skin, leading to a softer look if not managed properly as there is promotion of E2 receptor activity so we want to use it alongisde Nolvadex in prep to counteract that.
Anadrol is far and away my favorite androgen for personal use
Halotestin:
Halotestin (Fluoxymesterone) is the go-to when you need raw aggression and strength during the final stages of prep. It’s not about size or fullness with Halo—this compound is all about hardness, aggression, and pushing your strength limits while your body is in a calorie-depleted state.
Here’s why Halotestin is used:
Aggression and Strength: Halotestin is notorious for increasing aggression and intensity in the gym. It’s a pure androgenic compound, meaning it gives you the mental edge to keep pushing hard through the toughest part of prep when you’re low on energy and calories.
Muscle Hardness: Halotestin doesn’t aromatize, meaning there’s no estrogen conversion and no water retention. This makes it ideal for the last few weeks before a show when bodybuilders need to look as dry and hard as possible. Halo amplifies the dense, grainy look because it enhances the androgenic signaling without pulling in extra water under the skin.
Halotestin is not used for bulking or fullness—it’s strictly a pre-contest hardener. Its extremely androgenic profile drives up aggression and strength, helping you hold onto muscle and push through those final, grueling workouts.
Proviron
Proviron (Mesterolone) is often overlooked, but it plays a crucial role in contest prep for bodybuilders who want to maximize their conditioning and androgenic signaling without bloating.
Here’s how Proviron works in prep:
Binding to SHBG (Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin): Proviron binds to SHBG, which frees up more active testosterone in the body. This increases the anabolic activity of any testosterone-based compounds you’re using, amplifying their effects. In a nutshell, Proviron boosts the effectiveness of your cycle by freeing up more of the testosterone that’s already in your system.
No Aromatization: Like Halotestin, Proviron doesn’t aromatize, so there’s no risk of water retention or estrogenic side effects. This makes it ideal for maintaining a dry, hard look leading up to a contest.
Androgenic Enhancement: Proviron has a high affinity for androgen receptors, and while it’s a relatively mild anabolic compound, it greatly enhances the androgenic environment of the body. This helps sharpen the physique, giving that harder, more chiseled look without adding unwanted size or bloat.
Because of its mild nature, Proviron is often used throughout prep to keep estrogen levels low and androgen levels high, without the harsh side effects of stronger compounds.
Maximizing 5 Alpha-Reductase for Optimal Results
Don’t forget—5 alpha-reductase doesn’t just create DHT. It also deactivates cortisol and aldosterone and activates progesterone, creating allopregnanolone. This enzyme is crucial, not just for DHT production, but for your overall hormone balance.
If you’re looking to make the most of your testosterone and DHT, you need to ensure your 5AR is functioning properly.
Whether you’re optimizing your physique for a show or just trying to get the most out of your hormone profile, don’t neglect this enzyme’s importance.
To leave you with:
The more you understand how testosterone and DHT work together, the more control you have over your results. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you only need one or the other—both play critical roles in optimizing performance and physique.
